Squiggle
This is a squiggle. It happens to have only 4 layers but with kids, you can get them to draw more layers and add vibrant colours.
Tuning In:
As a tuning in exercise I would introduce colours and maybe get the children to take turns to say which colours are good contrasts with one another or which colours look good together. There are no right answers so encourage responses. It would be a good idea to have a colour wheel.
Art Making:
Children are shown a squiggle. (The yellow shape in the drawing shown is the classic squiggle!) Get the children to try drawing it. There should be only 5 'spokes'.
It is not a flower so don't encourage drawings of flowers. Some children might need help with the first shape. Get children to draw layers around the squiggle following the squiggle's shape. The line should dip when the shape dips. Draw as many layers as they can. Get them to out line these lines with a black marker. Next, Get them to colour each layer with a vibrant colour!
Art Talk:
Once they have completed their pieces , display them and allow each child to talk about the squiggles. Lead them to talk about the colours, the process etc. Find out if they have ideas for doing squiggles with other shapes. A follow up lesson would be a computer lesson drawing squiggles with MSPaint. It takes extra patience to draw with a mouse. So it is a good experience. But colouring takes only a few seconds!! Put up the pieces!!
